Transitions

Throughout our lives we experience lots of changes, some of which happen to us whether we like it or not, and others that we get to choose.

Changes that inevitably come up as you’re getting on with life include:
- living in an aging body
- approaching/entering menopause
- bereavements
- long term health conditions

The lack of control we have over such things can be challenging and disorienting. You might end up just plowing on with life as things shift and change within you, not taking the time or space you need to process the impact of these changes. Therapy offers an opportunity to slow down and reflect on how you are affected by getting older, and complications that can arise. It allows valuable space to take stock of whether things are working as they are and to think about how you might need or want to do things differently.

Life transitions and decisions that we might decide to make include:
- gender transition (social and/or medical)
- ending a relationship
- moving house/area
- starting university
- changing careers
- deciding whether to have children

These might be exciting changes that can still be scary and confusing, even when we are the ones driving the change. Rarely is a decision straightforwardly positive. In therapy you can explore these nuances and complexities in a way that you may not be free to do with other people in your life. A lot of changes and decisions involve loss and accepting the routes not taken, and we can explore together how to process that and let go of what you need to.
